A Wall Street Journal story explores New Hampshire’s bid to remain a single-area-code state.

New Hampshire, like Vermont, is one of 11 remaining single-area-code states. There were 35 in 1947 when area codes were introduced.

“Somewhere along the line, area codes morphed from tools to help call long distance without switchboard operators to cultural identifiers,” writes Jon Kamp for WSJ.

For years, some New Hampshire officials have fretted about the dwindling supply of phone numbers affixed with the iconic area code. NH may need a second area code as early as the end of 2027.

Maine faces a similar predicament, although recent efforts have delayed the impending doom from early 2025 to 2032.

Rutland joins cell phone restriction movement – Rutland High School has joined the ranks of Vermont schools dramatically limiting the use of cell phones in schools this year, according to the Rutland Herald.

“The policy outlines that devices may be used in common areas, such as the lobby, hallways and cafeteria, in a manner that ‘respects the rights of others.’ In line with the Acceptable Use Policy, students may use their personal devices before school, during lunch while in the cafeteria, between classes and after school.”

Vermont Public also surveyed the landscape around the state, including speaking with a Thetford Academy student.
